Land titles website causing issues with real estate transactions

Many land title searches are done of on the internet these days. So, when real estate transactions in Alberta were shaken up by problems with the province's land titles site that results in it being off line for days, it made for some very disgruntled purchasers. Many of those people have lost hundreds of dollars because of the glitch on the site that is used to finalize real estate deals.

The outage was blamed on routine system maintenance but affected land titles offices in Calgary and Edmonton. They closed their doors because of the system crash. Service Alberta, which maintains the site, said it would be taking steps to make sure such a technical faux pas never happens again. The province, however, has not said whether those who have had to fork out extra cash for their real estate deals would be reimbursed.

Some users of the site are saying they're miffed that Service Alberta is not letting them know if they will be getting any money back from the province. No information has been forthcoming, other than they will be extending opening hours at land titles offices to deal with the backlog of searches. The site is the primary database for the storage of documents pertaining to land titles in the province.

As this case shows, not all real estate transactions run a smooth course. Getting the advice of an Alberta lawyer on the particulars of a deal might help both purchasers and sellers to thwart any potential problems in a transaction. A lawyer will always act in the best interests of his or her clients in any purchases or sales of real estate.
